The sciencealert website, should be taken with a grain of salt. Many of their articles are iffy and some are down right incorrect.
This of sciencealert as People magazine for science. :/

There's nothing I see wrong with the article I see linked, it's just the absolutely mind-boggling jump from Fungus Spreading, Virus Spreading, Therefore virus is bio-engineered fungus

Science Alert seems more like a publish or perish site for wanna be-s. I'm not as up on the medical as you are, but in some of the other articles... I see a lot of guessing and/or wishing going on.

/e I've had that site bookmarked for at least 5-6 years. Some of the articles are iffy at best, and some are down right wrong.

They're both legitimate science websites that report directly from the studies. They're about as legitimate as you can get because they don't actually pander to either side. Tin foil on the other hand is making a conclusion based on infowars level conspiracy theories and trying to use legitimate websites to peddle that nonsense.

US is catching up quickly, number 5 on the list now after China, Italy, Spain and Germany.

edit: Spain, Germany and US fighting for third spot actually. Not too much difference

Science alert is not a journal, so it isn't a place people who have to "publish or perish" would go to publish.

I am a 3rd year Internal Medicine resident in a large hospital on the east coast and I will be starting Infectious Disease fellowship this July.

This thing is the real deal, while as with most diseases it appears to be far worse in the elderly, I have seen young people intubated and doing poorly too.

We are seeing a large influx of (fever, dry cough, myalgias, SOB) in our ED, the hospital I work in just created a coronavirus critical care unit, the rooms are negative pressure, and over the last 4-5 days it has filled up and everyone in there is intubated. Some of them are under 50.

Most of the doctors and nurses in the hospital are worried that we too are going to get it, we are dangerously low on PPE and the equipment that we do have is of very poor quality anyway, some of the intensivists are taking prophylactic Hydroxychloroquine....

Now residents are being sent home early, we have cancelled our clinics, all med students rotations are cancelled, no visitors are allowed in the hospital so the corridors are deserted, the lunch room is closed, etc....

How much, how often? 1000 mg/day? Just curious since MSN ran a piece with a sensational headline:

...as if drugs were prescribed in gram doses instead of milligrams.

I know. That's why I included... for wanna be-s. It's like a place where peeps that don't make the journals publish their crap.

/e It's like publishing w/o peer review. Don't take my word for it... just read the articles for a few years and make up your own mind. ^^

I'm seeing the US in fourth now in total confirmed cases (ahead of Germany by almost 2000 cases). US mortality rate is around 1.1%. World mortality rate is over 4.0% now, although that is likely skewed heavily by Italy's 9.0% rate and nearly 5000 deaths.
