This isn't really accurate.
Trump only won the south by large margins , in the midwest and in swing states he had 1-3% margins in a lot of districts.
So on the west and east coast he as expected only got 30-40% of the vote but gained 55-65% of the vote in the south and just edged out small margins in middle america.
So you can make the argument that if he barely wins the 3rd largest population region and notably loses the 1st and 2nd largest population regions and only has a big margin win in the smallest population regions in the US , that the electoral college argument that it prevents the majority of popular vote from holding other large sectors of the population hostage to kind of be not as sound as an argument.
For the most part , Northeast/California sill have the largest weight to winning an election.
And gerrymandering has been going on pretty hard the last 20-30 years to try and have districts drawn up that put more conservative leaning populations grouped up together.
