Under these circumstances there's no way for an incumbent to win regardless of who they are.

Honestly it might not even matter. Trump's covid approval is sub-20% in swing states right now and that's universally the most important election issue.

He can pitch that Biden will be worse. Biden will never be able to rebuild the economy. Biden hasn't been seen in public for like two weeks.

He can pitch all he wants, doesn't mean it's going to convince anybody. The people have seen Trump's governance, and it's uniquely ill-suited to bad times.

Also, the American people aren't necessarily going to consider "Will Biden be able to rebuild?" They are just going to see Trump's performance in the last year and ask "Do I want the same thing to happen if we have another crisis, or if this crisis continues?"

One thing the Trump surrogates are right about is that the American people don't have to ask about a theoretical Trump handling of a pandemic like they would with a theoretical other president. They've seen Trump and so there is no guesswork. He does worse than nothing.

The economy was slow during a post-recession boom under Obama and the result will be the same under Biden. People like you with no attention span won't care, but the families in the rust belt that had to deal with the economic fallout of ~2010 Obama won't forget.
