I know this. I agree with your cause, just not with your method.

Yes, but does that extend to shaming and whatnot? Do you suggest we do the same with smokers? With people who practice dangerous sports? With people who refuse to see a doctor when they should?

Where do you draw the line of how unhealthy a person can be without being the constant target of humiliating, demotivating criticism?

people who are making the awful decision of eating themselves to death could use humiliating, demotivating criticism. Shame is a powerful motivational tool and hurt feelings is a lot better than death at 40 due to obesity

Until there's any research that supports this, I'll stick to my own intuition and experience that shaming very rarely results in motivation.

This is ridiculous, most fat people have no idea that they're fat or that other people might look down on them for it, and if you just make it clear to them that being fat is going to lead to people's disapproval, they'll stop being fat immediately. If only someone would tell the fatties. If only. :(

it's more in opposition of the fat acceptance movement which may persuade people that being obese is normal or fine

Not really relevant, but was listening to Catharsis and this line came up.

I see your point. Thing is, being obese is normal and fine, if it's the result of intentional overeating (because you enjoy overeating or whatever). It is not fine when fat people convince themselves that they're not overeating at all. This is a common psychological phenomenon and those people need to be helped, which is quite the opposite from being shamed.

And, I repeat my question: where is the line between dangerous/self-harming behavior that society should accept, and dangerous/self-harming behavior that society should openly judge?

When people start claiming that their unhealthy/selfharming behavior is actually healthy and beneficial.

People can eat, drink, dope, ... themselves to death if they want to, if that is what they really want. It's not OK to try and convince others to do the same.

That's probably because you bolded out too little. "Being obese is normal and fine" indeed sounds pretty ludicrous without context.

So the problem is the rash of people who are reading fat acceptance sites and deciding that they're going to be fat now coz it's awesome?
