the reason is that if you "buy a scientist" and they publish garbage, everybody else will rip them apart in the literature and they will quickly lose reputation. Also, you have to disclose your funding sources.

That's not to say you can't influence scientists, but it's not in the same corrupt way you influence politicians. For instance, the sugar industry funded fat-centric research for decades so the health problems from excess fat consumption would be found.
