I'd think with a single high profile celebrity who willingly approaches Gaza, the kidnap scenario is way more likely than being killed, though the latter is possible. I mean you can always get Jonestown'd like Leo Ryan did. Humans when regressed to full barbarism will kill 19 and take 1 as a slave or prisoner, and that's been true for tribes in ancient times and indian warriors in the americas and palestinians. Its the chaos of pillaging and plunder, when its inconvenient to take people alive. But that's true for marauding and warring, not so much for PR stunts gone awry. If a dumb liberal somehow actually puts themselves into Hamas control like a Hanoi Jane, they'd have reason to seize her as a hostage since she's valuable that way and easy to control.

Goom, pause now and lets ignore everything for a moment, yes i was being bold and i will hold my hand up.

regarding the notion of Hamas taking our Greta hostage:

1. Israel is the main party accused of previously attacking the flotilla.
2. Hamas condemned the attack (presumably by Israel) on the flotilla last month.
3. Hamas also expressed solidarity with the flotilla.
4. There is no precedent of Hamas attacking activists ever.

Hamas has welcomed and praised these efforts, both rhetorically and symbolically.

Israel has a documented history of attacking or using force against activists, particularly those involved in efforts to challenge the blockade of Gaza or support Palestinians. The most prominent and well-documented example is the 2010 Mavi Marmara incident.

The MOST LIKELY SCENARIO is that ISRAEL will attack the Flotilla again in the next 10 days. June 7 - 9th is my best guess.

You know this entire war started when Hamas slaughtered a bunch of peace activists at a peace festival, taking others hostage?

BREAKING: Three senior DHS sources tell @FoxNews that the Boulder terror suspect is an Egyptian national in the U.S. illegally as a visa overstay who entered the U.S. during the Biden administration. I’m told Mohamed Sabry Soliman arrived at LAX on 8/27/22 on a B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa with an authorized stay through 2/26/23, but he overstayed & never left.

I’m told on 9/29/22, he filed some sort of claim with USCIS, potentially an asylum claim, and on 3/29/23, USCIS under the Biden admin gave him work authorization, which expired on 3/28/25.

Sorry for the offtopic, but as someone who only joined PaRD in 2017, I'm genuinely curious why that specific election or cycle broke this sub.

it was an influx of fringe posters, both left and right. before that we had a more cohesive generally center politics sub. and i dont hate fringe politics, but since 2016 the fringe has stayed and the center has left, by and large. so what's left is less minor disagreement, and more vehement angry polar opposites.

2016 was when many people who weren't before became politically active, found pard, and its gone downhill imo since then.

Nearly half of Gaza's population is younger than 18 to begin with. According to the 2023 article below, their population share stood at 47% back then. So if someone says that "40% of Gaza victims are children", he actually argues that Israel is NOT specifically targetting children.

I see, thanks. But to be fair, the Trump era has also polarized a lot of folks who previously held centrist or moderate political beliefs. So maybe it's not just centrists leaving, but also centrists evolving into staunch partisans. Just look at the way IceMage and Goom have zoomed in opposite political directions during the Trump years.

I think another factor is that "college-educated white men" have become one of the most evenly split demographic groups in terms of their politics, and that's the group which (presumably) makes up a disproportionate share of PaRD.

yes i agree that definitely happened too. its just easier for me mentally to notice people leaving than it is to track the opinions of those who stayed. but for sure that has happened.
