Regarding 2): I think that was an accident. Imho, all 4 pipes were supposed to be blown up, but whoever did it failed to catch the fourth one. Operating with surgical precision at this depth, potentially with a remote-controlled mini submarine, is tough.
Regarding 3): that's increasingly the explanation I'm considering the most likely. By attacking their own infrastructure in international waters, Russia can send the message without taking any risk of triggering a war with NATO. And the Nord Stream pipelines were a dead investment anyway at this point.

not supplying gas to the EU is not a reason for Nato to go to war with Russia. I mean the EU is heavily sanctioning Russia, so why do they even want the gas. these sanctions and tit for tat is a serious a case of stepping on one's own foot.
it makes no logical sense for russia to do this. i cant fathom it.

i am still wondering why this happened only to russia, because clearly nobody was bothered by other invasions from the past

or current ones like azerbaijan in armenia, the EU answered by buying MORE oil and gas from them ^_^

if 2 toddlers fight people laugh then say "break it up".

I had heard security around the pipe was quite advanced.

its hundreds of miles long tho right?

in any case every country involved has a military special operations unit capable of diving and planting a bomb on it then remote detonation. that's like 1960s level cold war stuff.

The argument isn't that Putin did it to make sure once and for all that he cannot send any more gas to Europe via his Nord Stream pipelines, the argument was that this was a threat by him, hinting that he has the capability to attack our critical energy infrastructure, like for example the pipelines connecting Norwegian gas fields with Germany or Poland.

Russia being caught attacking our infrastructure would of course be grounds for NATO to declare war. Instead blowing up his own investment ruins, which were quite literally dead in the water, was a way for him to get this point across without taking any risks.

Yes ok I can accept this as a possible scenario, i had not fully considered it. to be honest we are really in the realms of WTF right now in terms of escalation. so many things happening.

That's quite an expensive and illogical way to make a statement.

In terms of proving that he has the capability, I guess it's sound logic that a nation capable of producing nuclear subs is also capable of blowing up a pipeline in very shallow waters.

He doesn't need to prove that he can do that.

Its obvious to everyone that Russia did it, except for a circle of clowns/Kremlin shills that gathered here trying to convince others a circle is actually a square.

It's not clear at all. Russia didn't express any wrath in any way which would mean they don't know who it was. Meanwhile, in our press, framing Russia for the incident has become with "indices". How can you tell who it was until an investigation delivers anything in a week or so? Scholz didn't say anything about the matter either which would mean he doesn't know either. For me, Poland is becoming increasingly likely culprit. I still think the US isn't stupid enough to pull that off. According to the latest news, the explosion was equivalent of 50 tons TNT. It has to be a state actor.

If they are uncertain, is their first reaction going to be fire and fury? Same for the EU and US

Say it's russia if uncertain. This always works on empty heads
