Didn't look into it.....replied anyways.

Thanks for playing.

The desert ones work the cold climate ones do not. They rely on manufactured insulation, burning propane, or burning wood to stay warm among other issues.

Imagine being upset that a house in the arctic circle needs a propane stove and insulation to keep warm. Way to move the goal post :D. Let me dig up my pictures of me staying in an earthship while it was -17 degrees out.

Imagine not knowing the ENTIRE POINT of an earthship home.

You've lost the plot mate,

An earthship in the arctic circle will still:
1. Reduce human imprint on landfills by turning trash into building material with earth rammed tires, bottle/can walls
2. Reduce dependency on heating and cooling requirements
3. Reuse water in grey systems to reduce overall water consumption
4. Produce some food through the greenhouse walkway buffer zone from the living space
5. Treat human waste through bio cells
6. Generate electricity through photovoltaic cells

Notice the bold... "reduce" not eliminate.. "some" not fully self-sufficient.

If you want to keep moving the goalpost and say its only an earthship if its 100% self-reliant you are not familiar with the complexity of growing 100% of your own food. All earthships, even in perfect conditions require an obcene amount of space for agriculture that it would be self-defeating, but to ignore the positive impact an earthship would have, even in the MOST extreme circumstances is childish.

You still think I didn't look into it, and replied anyway? I've been following Mike Reynolds work for nearly 20 years.

2. Look into how heating works on these. It's literally a fight against nature where you shot yourself in the foot first by building this type of home in cold soil. Factually wasteful compared to traditional homes that don't use cold dirt as an insulator.

Passive solar as a heat collector still collect heat better than a wood framed house. Its just a fact of thermodynamics.

If there was enough solar heat to counteract the cold air/ground it wouldn't be a cold environment in the first place. Welcome to how seasons work.

I see physics was not a required subject at your high school.

I keep forgetting about how warm the ground is during winter and how cold it gets during summer. It's almost like the further you get from the sun the MORE energy the sun transfers. Right?

Igloos are warm because snow insulates. Also, the dome shape offers little resistance to the wind. Inside an igloo, the temperature is usually around 32 degrees Celsius.

Food for thought
