The whole western media sphere really shot themselves in the foot on the coverage of this by taking completely the wrong tack. There was plenty of opportunity to minimize and deflect- say the bioweapons were just old soviet leftovers being preserved, that they were being routinely destroyed after the invasion, emphasize their peacetime applications, etc etc. Instead we were told that the entire story was a hoax and made up Russian propaganda, no such facilities existed, no bioweapons existed, no western funding existed, and anyone spreading those claims was a traitor punishable by death as Mitt Romney just had to chime in, the bloodthirsty firebrand he is.

It gets hard to call out the other side as propaganda when your own side is lying nonstop

If your infectious disease samples are weaponizable. Nerf's Super Soaker department are not arms dealers. Samples of powdery mildew at the horticultural biological research laboratory developing apple cultivars doesn't make for a weapon of war or terrorism.
We're talking about plague and anthrax and more unknowns, leftovers from the USSR's bioweapons programs. Pretty sure if you were at a BSL-3+ facility you'd know it.
