you're missing my point entirely. Mccain and Ruboto criticized him for something entirely different than the "good people on both sides quote", even though years removed we all attribute that 2nd round quote to the 1st round, which Rubio was criticizing him for (round 1). It's a Mandella effect instance.
yes the Aug 11th rally was organized by neo nazis, but they didnt have a bouncer that checked everyone had a Mein Kampf book to let them in. when nazis organize a rally typically as many or more counter protesters show up. same with the KKK, westboro baptists, etc. they're a flame for moths to flock to.
like i said in my first post, nazi existence excuses any violence that follows to people with no nuance. its silly. did i like seeing that black guy cold clock a nazi? yes. but do i go as far as to suggest his very existence excuses violence against him with a blank check? no, of course not.

and we cant forget this is all a string coming from "do you think trump would put secret nazi symbols in his ads". you offered Charlottesville as potential evidence, and in that context it seems like very weak sauce. i think we should all be able to agree that even tho trump is an idiot and dogwhistles to latent dixiecrat type southern ideals, that there's a LONGCRY different between that and signaling actual nazis. as if they wont vote for him anyways.
They didn't criticze him for the "good people on both sides" quote because it hadn't happened yet. They criticized him for his august 12th comment where he refused to condemn neo nazis specifically when asked and went out of his way to draw a moral equivalence between the two parties. If he had made the "good people on both sides" quote in its entirety on August 12th, where he specifically called out Neo Nazis as bad people on the right, none of this would have ever been an issue. It's literally a disinformation campaign by the right to single out his August 16th comments and pretend they existed in a vacuum to avoid the point that he was already under fire by both sides when he made those comments.
I actually think you are missing the point. Trump went out of his way to avoid criticizing neo-nazis specifically when asked for 3 days, and only conceded when basically forced by the most prominent members of his own political party. This is the exact same tactic that David Duke specifically said is a sign of support when Trump avoided condemning him for several days during his campaign.
That's why I say Trump is fine with dog whistling to the far right.
