It is indeed interesting the discourse I'm seeing online among my far lefty friends. The reporting and conversation often doesn't include that he was driving under the influence of alcohol beyond the legal limit. That, of course, does not justify anything that happened the other night by way of the officer's over-reacting; however, the alternatives being proposed about calling him a ride home are incomplete. What should we, or could we, do about someone who is driving under the influence? That's a risk to everyone, and driving is certainly a privilege. I have not seen many conversations cover this aspect.
Driving under the influence is extremely dangerous to yourself and other people and should be considered a very serious offense if convicted in a court of law.
Personally, I think we should decrease the legal/financial burden of and empty our prison system of nonviolent drug offenders so that we can use more resources to go after DUIs/DWIs harder and other things that actually jeopardize the lives or wellbeing of others.
Not that prison or legal punishments are rehabilitative or even crime-deterring, but prisons can function as a way to keep society temporarily safer - which really could be the main function of them given that they are not rehabilitative in their current states.
