That's just not true.
Pew came out with a poll today that showed 51% of respondents said Trump should be removed from office by the Senate and 46% said the trial should result in the president staying in office.
Reuters/Ipsos came out with a poll that showed 72% agreed that the trial “should allow witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the impeachment charges to testify,” including 84% of Democrats and 69% of Republicans.
The GOP aren't blocking witnesses and a fair trial because it's what the American people want. They are doing it because it is politically advantageous to do so.
It's the exact same thing. There won't be ANY electoral consequences for most of the GOP. Do you really think that Tom Cotton is going to get primaried or lose to a Democrat?
Remember, the Senate is skewed towards Republicans because there are more Republican states. You can't go by what the nation wants, rather, you need to look at each state individually. I think I'd break it down into what do Republicans want and what do Independents want if you want to keep it simple. Ultimately, Trump's approval rating is higher than having a fair trial so that really only leaves you with the purple states. Those Senators are in a difficult position because they NEED Trump to rally the base but they also need to seem impartial. Until REPUBLICANS value a fair trial over Trump, you're going to see a sham. So yea, I stand by what I said. There's not enough pressure for Senators to throw Trump under the bus.
Lastly, how many Republicans want witnesses so Hunter/Joe Biden and the whistleblower testify? A lot of them might not be interested in what we think is the truth.

That's the political calculus behind it, yes. But the point excellence made is actually pretty good: if the evidence and the testimonies we've got so far were sufficient for the House to impeach Trump and provide the basis for their articles of impeachment, why shouldnt this same evidence also be sufficient for the Senate to decide on these exact articles of impeachment?
Let's not pretend like only one side is playing this dirty. Both sides have already made up their mind on whether Trump shall be found guilty or be acquitted. The reason Democrats want to hear more witnesses is not because they believe this would really change their case; it wont. No, they want additional witnesses so that they can inflict more damage on Trump and make the vote to acquit him as politically costly as possible for the vulnerable GOP senators like Collins or Gardner. The GOP wants to prevent that and get out of this with as little damage to its senators and its brand as possible.
It should be and Schiff has clearly said that in his arguments. He's trying to pique the curiosity of the Senators because there are more details yet to be uncovered. But yea, I agree that the Democrats want to drag this out as long as possible.
