i'm sure the majority of israelis just want to live in peace. there was an increasing amount vocally opposing the brutal occupation.
also, literally everyone knows that harsh retaliation will only lead to more radicalisation and further violence, but that's already accounted for and silently accepted or even desired:

- first of all, it's a numbers game: the vast power imbalance dictates that there will always be significantly more palestinian victims than israelis. fatah and hamas simply don't have the means to inflict serious damage (as in threatening the state, of course individually it's devastating). as disgusting and as cowardly as such terror attacks are, they are not even remotely an existential threat to israel. they are just acts of desperation and hate from radicalised fanatics, but essentially not more than a bee stinging a lion.

- secondly, it's a political calculation: far right hardliners like netanyahu don't want this conflict resolved in a peaceful manner. it's a critical part of his political survival. his core voter base wants to see palestinians oppressed and suffering, ideally gone.

all that said, miss me with your anti-semitic bs. israel has a right to exist and also to defend itself. the fact that their leaders have established a de facto apartheid state does not mean the jewish people as a whole have no right to a country. it's a complicated situation.

I’m not the foil hat kind of person but trying to understand the why and motive for this attack, at this time. If any moderates here can add insight where I’m lacking

-u have historic Saudi deal coming up that was a huge road block For Israeli in seizing more Palestine land. Objectively good for Palestine
-there is an incident where there are no deaths and mild injuries (Al aqsa) and use THIS as your decision is to retaliate with 1000 rockets and brutalize a small community
-you decide for the over compensatory reaction when you have a known pro right war hungry guy looking for any excuse for West Bank

It is clear Hamas not operating on benefit of Palestine individuals. So painful how many millions will suffer because of the actions of hundreds

I am not disagreeing with that, however there is the practical challenge of finding this land to be Jews' country without displacing people who have been living there for centuries. Yes Jews want their own country, but people also want to retain their ancestral land.

This is such a sad and terrible situation that is only going to get much worse.
The attacks were heinous, despicable and inexcusable. It seems like a forgone conclusion that the response will be brutal and many more innocent people will die.
Many political thought leaders and influencers are calling for extreme escalations and literal genocide. This includes most of the supposed antiwar and dissident candidates.

I mean, you can find a bunch of examples in the straw hut shitholes of Africa. Maybe the Rohingya in Myanmar? And the Serbian war. Kind of stretching the 'developed' part for them.
In the post WW2 era its been mostly unheard of in countries with indoor plumbing. There have been campaigns of mass bombings of rebels like Syria and repression of minorities like in China. But even in some of the bitter conflicts like Ukraine, its usually slow burns where civilians have fled as refugees long before the front lines of a battle could reach them, and soldiers are just shelling each other from trenches. What we saw in Israel is far more akin to the bronze age, its a real anachronism. Even in the long history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict I don't think there's been anything like this, they've certainly killed and displaced each other and even massacred towns before, but not pillaging for women to strip naked

This 'war' is not just starting, with numbers like Helical provided it's clearly been a lifetime of war conditions for the Palestinians and lifetime of occupier culture engrained into Israeli populous. Blown away Israeli caught off guard, very atypical.
