I don't think subsidizing healthy/fresh food would help much. The reason people eat junk is because it tastes good, not because it's more affordable.
Yes and no. Its a combination of things certainly on the unhealthy side. Typically, on top of some of its more addictive ingredients its usually convenient, toss a frozen pizza in the oven, chicken strips in the oven, egg roll in the microwave, or whatever, makes it very appealing to parents and then kids eat that garbage day in and day out. On a calorie to calorie basis of course its also going to be more affordable, junk food is typically also high in fat, fat has 9 calories per gram vs protein and carbs which is 4 calories per gram, they also have a lot of what i'd call cheap carbs that have low micronutrient profiles.
With that all said though I think you do still attempt to lower the price on fruits and vegetables, certain dairy and meat products to at least attempt to entice, at some point there will be a value point where people say, okay ill get that.
Junk food is so entrenched in life though at this point I am at a loss of how you combat it. Clearly everyone is as more and more people become obese. Its illegal at this point to smoke around kids, harmful substances of age limits, should we allow parents to continue to shove pop tarts and coke down their kids throats, I guess so because I cant really see how you stop it.
