How would you have preferred these $40b to be spent, so that they alleviate the pain of inflation? Just handing them out to Americans would be the same story as the American Rescue Plan/covid stimulus and only fuel inflation.

The truth is that the best thing Biden could do to tackle inflation is a policy of "drill baby drill". Coincidentally, it would also be the most effective way of waging economic war against Putin - driving down world market prices for oil and gas would dry up his war chest. It would also soothe market concerns about an energy crunch and thus inspire more consumer and investor confidence.
