Well, first off, they dont give the same amount to anybody, only those who had a job before the corona outbreak will benefit from this. Second, the differences in wage for everyone who was earning not more than £3125 will still be reflected in this payment. Third, this is not about a permanent transformation of the economy, this is about protecting the economy and preserving jobs through an extremely sharp but hopefully short-term recession. It is the very goal of this short-term "semi-socialism" that capitalism can go on as usual after this crisis is over. Fourth, the government is not bailing those out who made bad job or investment decisions like in socialism, they are bailing out people (employees and employers alike) who got into trouble without having done anything wrong.

These were the guys that slated labour all the time for being fiscally irresponsible spending money to get us out of the 2008 financial crisis. Cameron & Boris' governments have been the most fiscally irresponsible in recent history, Coronavirus notwithstanding. While I welcome this move I can't act like it isn't massively hypocritical, and it's also worth mentioning that the measures do not apply to those in the gig economy or the self employed.

Sounds like they did something wrong if they cant weather a few bad months. Why should the government bail out those who refuse to save?

They're bailing out the jobs first and foremost. This is not the time for fundamental debates about the flaws of a system where a significant share of the population is unable to save up, and where there are big temptations to consume instead of save even for those who could afford it.

Also, do you really want hundreds of thousands of people becoming homeless and/or not having enough to eat during a crisis where it's of utmost importance for as many people as possible to stay the fuck at home? Shit has already hit the fan, it's too late for philosophical debates.



I've been saying this for dozens of pages now in this thread: many of you seem to be unaware of how much stress this crisis will put on the economy and the financial system. We're closer to a meltdown than most think.





Oh, it definitely is massively hypocritical. Same story as with the arguments of the Tea Party vs the spending habits of the Trump administration and how most Tea Party politicians happily go along with it. The deficits all around the world will explode due to the coronavirus crisis. After it's over, the deficits will have to be reined in, and the national debts will have to be reduced. And this time around, the rich will not be able to duck away, this time around, it will simply not be possible to let the working poor and the middle class shoulder the bulk of the burden like they had to after the financial crisis.

I gotta agree with the point about the gig economy and self employed, this issue needs to be addressed.
