Not very often, but when it has... it has been a good thing.

But again, that's not the point. Do you seriously think it would be a good idea to elect the leader of one of the most powerful countries in the world...by popular vote?

The president would have to represent non-swing states then as well.. So.. yeah.

No, that's where the misunderstanding is, I think.

He (the President) has to represent this country. The entire country.
A popular vote would prevent this.

If we elected our president by popular vote, the ONLY states that would be represented would be about 5 or 6 of the most populous ones.

/e The U.S. is not your normal country. It's made of 50 states which think they are themselves.... countries.

I think it would likely lead to a mellowing of our politicians since they have to broaden their appeal significantly.

That's already built into the system. The people get to elect their congressmen, who in turn get to elect the President.

The focus would indeed shift towards the more populated areas, but votes can be gathered anywhere. If you're looking for a majority you'll have to look beyond the fewer swing/largely populated states.

I've already said I'm for citizens from the Netherlands to have an equal vote in EU elections as ppl from France, if they were to come in the future.

Yeah, it was a fairly good idea...the EU, but it seems that not all the participants are STILL feeling that way.

/e IF they had had an Electoral College...it might have worked out better.

The EU is in its infancy compared to the coalition between states in the US. We don't even vote who our president is (yet?) ;)

I am fully aware that the EU is rather newly come.

However, now this is just the gut feelings I've had concerning certain news articles in the recent past.

1. About 2-3 years ago, I saw in the news that my state, Pennsylvania, HAD to accept 2500 muslim refugees. I didn't like the fact that the US govt. decided that PA had to accept 2500 refugees.

2. At about the same time I heard on the news that Belgium was more or less requiring the same thing of the countries in the EU. I didn't think this was a good idea either.

3. Then I read about brexit, and thought to myself... makes sense to me. If I was the UK, I wouldn't want Belgium deciding that I had to take refugees.

Keep in mind that these refugees are not ALL the downtrodden angels they claim to be. Most probably are. But it's the few who aren't that will cause the problems.

All this aside though...IMO, the El;ectoral College is the ONE thing that keeps this country from being a major cluster-fuck....with a lot of nukes.

/ee

Wow, it almost looks like the EU is gonna NEED an Electoral College. :)
