they didnt compromise, trump winning the republican primary was more of a hostile takeover of a major party than a deliberate choice by their entire base. trump turned the GOP from social conservatism to cultural conservatism, and it worked.
but the main reason why it worked is that the hatred for clinton among almost the entire republican base in the end overcame the reservation that many traditional GOP voters felt for trump.
