The Right is generally hostile to social work as a profession. Funny, because there are a lot of social workers who are conservative. My utilization reviewer is libertarian for example. My first sensei was born again. But Republicans are constantly trying to knock our feet out from under is with irresponsible and a reckless policies. Shit like this really discourages people who are getting degrees in human services because we tend to be under paid as it is and we put in a lot of work that is quite important. What we do is actually quite dangerous too. I wrestle with psych patients a few times a week sometimes....people who are actively experiencing psychosis freak the fuck out if they think the nurses are murdering people behind the nursing station.....and people get hurt all the time. We are going into asylums, prisons, crackhouses, highway over passes, schools, into the homes of predators and abusers to face then....our inner fire gives our clients light in a dark world and gives them warmth in the cold. I don't know why the GOP doesn't respect the work we do. One county commissioner here said he would like to "chase all the social workers out with a stick" a few years back and now he's talking about heroin epidemic because he small governmented it for too long and shit is out of control now. Now the counties are spending way more cheese....
In general I agree, however it's not just social programs that are taking the hit. Almost 1/3 of the hospitals in this country are also nonprofit. Nurses, MAs, PAs, and physicians all utilized this as well. I would not lump these professions as being liberal overall. Take as an example a family practice doc who is making 130-150k sitting on >500k debt after you finish residency. The primary care docs, what this country is sorely lacking, have been banking on that 10 year income based repayment plan for years. By removing this you are only hurting the broad populace because primary care will be even less desirable.
