this calculation is bullshit since it
assumes without justification that there is zero correlation between party affiliation and gun crimes once you control for race.
the true issue I see with all the discussions about gun violence in the US is that it mixes shootings by drug dealers and street gangs with shootings committed by "regular" citizens.
truth is, the vast majority of firearms related homicides is committed but the former group of gangs, dealers, people living an irregular, criminal lifestyle. if you outlaw guns, those types of people will just get their guns illegally.
the main factor driving the gun victim numbers up in the US is poverty and gang violence in inner-cities, not gun ownership per se.
Switzerland is a good counterexample: a small, high-density country with tons of guns per capita, yet their gun violence is very low. why? because a) switzerland is a wealthy and safe country with low crime rates in general, and b ) almost every swiss gun owner belongs to the group of responsible, sane persons who you can trust a gun.
btw the high numbers in france dont surprise me at all - the country has large rural, low population density areas that are made for hunting...
