“A towel, [The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-boggingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.”

i mean, he wasn't wrong about his prediction, but holy shit - do people even realise how crazy that shit is? that romney following his conscience (and all the evidence) and vote to convict would not only put his whole political career in danger, but even his very life and that of his family?
and just to confirm that, he was disinvited from CPAC, with the chairman matt schlapp publicly stating that he was afraid for romney's 'physical safety' during the conservative event.

could a party become more cult-like than the republicans under trump? like in a dystopian novel, it's quite literally 'support the emperor, or you're done for - no dissent allowed'.

cue the trumpapologists and 'reasonable' right wingers claiming "well, i'm not a big fan of it BUT... it's totally justified / not trump's fault / everyone would do this / not illegal / he deserves it..."

Yep.

I feel like a lot of people have become numb to this stuff. It's important to step back and think about how crazy shit has gotten.

Sometimes I wonder if this phenomenon is possible on the left... but I don't think it is. You need loyal propagandists in the media to pull this off. Without Fox News and talk radio, Trump wouldn't be possible.

bernie's cult isnt as fervored, but its clearly something. attacks on GOP polling stations, aides saying Milwaukee will burn if Bernie loses, etc. again, not AS cookoo, but clearly has a cult following.

I agree, and Obama had somewhat of a cult-like following. The difference is one of magnitude as you say, and also the lack of loyal propagandists in the media. Chris Hayes and Rachel Maddow are biased, but they wouldn't turn reality on it's head to defend Bernie or Warren, like Trump's propagandists do.

agreed, i think there are/were 3 key difference between the Trump Cultists and Bernie Bros.

1. magnitude, although this i think isnt as extreme as it was in 2016. Bernie's cult is big and more excited now in 2020 imo.

2. media coverage from "their side". night/day here, trump gets kid gloves bernie gets brass knucks.

3. violence reported in the candidates name. rapidly changing it would seem, bernie bros are getting a bit more violent than in 2016 i'd say.
