There's no slope as slippery as the one you get when you start peeling away the protections of the first amendment. If Alex Jones can be sued for a billion dollars on emotional prejudice and self righteousness alone, then it doesn't matter what the actual facts are, who is telling the truth and who is believing lies. Because the next person up is going to be someone telling the truth when the truth is verbotten, like Kanye speaking out about the fact George Floyd provably died of a fentanyl overdose and Derek Chauvin was wrongly convicted in a show trial

If you were actually well acquainted with the facts you would know that Jones specifically defamed the families and made calls to action on his audience to "investigate it themselves" which ultimately amounted to the families being targeted in a way that caused material damages to the families and that isn't covered by free speech protections.

This was not a close case. Jones was in the wrong and is now being held to account.
