Few more thoughts:
1) The pipelines are ownd 51% by Russia. Their reaction is very calm and they talk about UN council. They literally threaten the west daily with nukes and when their billion dollar infrastructure gets attacked they say nothing? Come on. That would be the first real attack lol
2) There is still an undamaged pipeline which could deliver gas. Why would anyone else keep it intact besides russia?
3) Close before the winter chaos on the gas markets and all pipelines in danger definitely favours russia. The message is -> Your gas supplies for this winter aren't as save as you think.
4) increasing pressure on sanctions
5) dividing the west by blaming the US
Again, like all posts here, it's just a hypothesis. Who claims the know what happened lies.
Regarding 2): I think that was an accident. Imho, all 4 pipes were supposed to be blown up, but whoever did it failed to catch the fourth one. Operating with surgical precision at this depth, potentially with a remote-controlled mini submarine, is tough.
Regarding 3): that's increasingly the explanation I'm considering the most likely. By attacking their own infrastructure in international waters, Russia can send the message without taking any risk of triggering a war with NATO. And the Nord Stream pipelines were a dead investment anyway at this point.
