But we're not talking about uber drivers and pool boys with a college degree, we're talking about those who have a college AND sit at, or above, the 40% quantile of the income distribution.
Having no savings and an extremely tightly balanced budget is par for the course for Americans. If "having 10k in the bank account" is the standard, then some 60% of all Americans would have to be considered "poor".
At the end of the day, most beneficiaries of student loan forgiveness seem to be people who are held back from a life of relative privilege by their student loan debt, rather than the truly poor. This doesn't automatically make it bad policy to forgive this debt, but it's a lie to frame it as some sort of super progressive policy that benefits the underprivileged.
