Pointing out the realities of the whole trans thing is not transphobia, it is just being real. I cannot quote him directly having only seen the latest special (causing all the outrage) once, but having watched it in response to the outrage
I was left thinking, “what did he say that was bad exactly?”
Did he say everybody on this planet came out of a woman? Or something along those lines? In a world where old navy jean commercials have drag queens front and center and you find a basic biological fact controversial, maybe you need some serious help.
I contend that he is not pointing out realities.
In his special I am not contending that he has said things that are mean spirited and deliberately hateful. My point is more so that the things he is saying about trans people are misguided and hacky and generally aligns with messaging of transphobes.
Also good comedy is different than simply critiquing a group. Doing critiques of marginalized communities is a difficult line to ride while still being funny. I'm contending that a lot of his recent material on trans people is not even really even coming off as attempts at humor and is more like old man ranting (like he is trying to be like Geroge Carlin, but not doing it as well). I mean there was a joke or something that ended on a punchline or something of like imposs-a-pussy that was decent, doing jokes about trans people or at the expense of trans people is fine... its just kind of tiring with how much of the 'comedy' is the same joke or just mean spirited punching down that doesn't really make any poignant observations of the trans experience.
Dave made his career on doing transgressive comedy focusing on marginalized communities that hit hard with poignant observations. He kind of quit for a long time because he perceived that a lot of the audience wasn't really taking in the poignant observations he was trying to convey and were consuming it for the transgressive nature against the marginalized communities. With his trans jokes I'm kind of disappointed in him because I feel like he is making transgressive comedy focusing on a different marginalized community, but this time he is the one that is missing the poignant observations and not seeing that people are consuming it because of its transgressive nature against a different marginalized community.
