Most engineers and programmers aren't scientists. A scientist is somebody actively performing research.

Please read his original statement as it was not just about scientists.

Yeah but if I went back that far I'd just be pointing out you're still wrong in that those groups are far more liberal than conservative.

According to California. Keep hearing about polling and statistics in democrat ran states.

Just claiming you're clueless. As I know many programmers and engineers in my field of work that are definitely not liberal. Too put it simply for you it's more about location and background of where people are raised than what their job title is.

Well you're factually wrong, so, not sure what you're trying to accomplish. Super convincing anecdotal evidence, though.

scientists and researchers were chosen as "the people making the US great" without much of a real argument behind it. Integral to our success sure, even close to a majority of the reason we as a country are successful? no, that's just silly.

You could remove any other single factor: wealth (predominantly thanks to US tech in the first place) or military strength (also thanks to US tech) being the two obvious ones; and we are still the most powerful and influential nation on Earth.

Our scientific and technological dominance is by far the biggest reason the US is the most important country in the world (or at least was, strong case to be made that it is now or is becoming China or Russia since the election of Trump). It's not even close tbh. Get rid of that and we go way down the list.

I feel like this is something you should have looked up before trying to form an argument.

Wrong, because everything I've seen is based off of opinion pieces or polls in democrat strongholds. You can't say the majority of engineers or programmers are democrat or republican. It's complete non sense to say otherwise.

Saucisson already posted a relevant statistic on the previous page.

Look up political following of San Francisco Bay Area, of Boston and MIT, of STEM majors in general, etc.

I'm not debating the statement over scientists as there's many reasons they would tend not to be republican, but an engineer or a programmer don't fit into the same category. I know plenty in my area alone that are republicans. I also know from when a discussion of polls come up i never hear anyone say they've been called or asked about anything.
