i shook my head when i saw so called conservatives cheering at the nuclear option to get in Gorsuch. Pretty short sighted when there's a chance that the next 2-3 appointments could be flaming liberals.
the filibuster has become an overpotent and overused tool of obstruction that contributes a lot to the washington gridlock.
this point aside, it's very likely that the next supreme court judges to be replaced will be ginsburg, breyer and/or kennedy. so say trump gets elected out of office in 2020 and replaced by a democratic president - even then chances are high that this president will only replace liberal judges and not really be able to tip the balance of the court. should one of them die or be forced to resign before the end of trumps term, which isnt super unlikely either, trump could replace a liberal or centrist judge with a conservative and tip the balance to the right.
so essentially, republicans have the "strategic upper hand" on supreme court nominations for the forseeable future. Imho, ginsburg and breyer speculated that clinton would win and planned on resigning during her term. instead of resigning when they could during obama's tenure, they took a gamble and it backfired spectacularly.
