Here I thought it was because we have laws for clean water, clean air, vaccinations, government campaigns to fortify bread with vitamins and minerals, universal education and science funding etc. etc.

Lifespan didn't really take off until we had a central government start legislating for the people. It can actually be traced specifically to a few dozen government actions such as listed above.

He absolutely made the right choice for himself based on his personality

If it was me I would have gone up there and not said a word and showed a video of all the people making fun of him at previous dinners give a big shit eating grin and sat down again. That would have been the way for a regular witty person that can take fire to handle it.

Trump isn't a regular witty person that can handle fire so he made the right choice.

All he has is his very loyal base and giving them their semi-monthly redneck pep talk is much more strategic.

He gets slammed by the bubble left every night on tv with the same rehashed jokes told at the dinner. Many jokes that they would get all sorts of butthurt if they were made about one of their snowflakes

Vegas odds explanation for those who don't understand statistics and probability, and who think that Vegas was "wrong": https://electionbettingodds.com/TrackRecord.html

Quote (Election Betting Odds)
When a candidate favored by bettors loses, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking the bettors were "wrong". But remember that when bettors give someone, for example, a 65% chance to win -- that also means the bettors give the person a 35% chance to lose.

The real way to judge the bettors' accuracy is to consider: out of all the different candidates whom bettors have given a 65% chance of winning - how many actually won?

If the bettors were perfectly accurate, the candidates whom they gave a 65% chance would win exactly 65% of the time.

On ElectionBettingOdds.com, out of the 11 times the bettors gave a candidate between a 60% and 70% chance of winning on election day - that candidate actually won 64% of the time. That's pretty spot-on.

Vegas gave the highest chances to Jeb Bush early one which was the best choice given the information at the time. We should refrain from making predictions that early because they tend to be wrong. If you do, you end up with gems like:

I'm seriously so sick of hearing about Trump already; he's a fringe candidate who stands no chance at getting the nomination. He's this year's Ron Paul (gets tons of attention on the internet but loses by a landslide).
