You wouldn't want to send your kids to the best colleges in the world?

take away the elite colleges and universities and after that you will find a huge void where decent, middle class facilities should be

bullshit. the term "mean" is an umbrella term for all kinds of measures of central position/tendency in a sample, random variable distribution or a numerical series. if someone is talking about the median, it's common practice to actually call it "median". when a source is refering to the "mean" of something without further specification, it's safe to assume they are talking about the arithmetic mean.

Well then it's super good for me that when I used the term mean, I pulled the numbers straight from the wikipedia entry on median incomes by country, meaning your statement that it's "safe to assume" isn't safe at all.

lazy american

I work 60 hours per week 9 months out of the year, and 40 hour weeks for the other 3 months, and have for the last 10 years. Definitely lazy.

Is it true that the best universities in the world are in the US? Yes.

Is it true that education inflation is outstripping the full measure of inflation by a factor of 4? Also yes.

What void would that be? My brother holds a degree from the Carlson School of Management (no slouch there), found at plain old University of Minnesota. He paid for the classes himself, with money he earned from the US Navy via the GI Bill. Awfully middle class if you ask me.

/e though I do find it funny that you want to "take away" that which I was talking about, which you don't get to do. Now repeat after me: "The US has the best colleges in the world."

Examples?

https://www.thebestschools.org/features/100-best-universities-in-world-today/

4 European entries in the top 20, 3 of which are British and 1 Swiss. The rest of the top 20 are all American, and over half of the top 100 are too.

It does not seems unjustified to assert that the Shanghai ranking is a hasty, crude and ill-conceived exercise without any value.

Where are the Nobel Prize in Literature ?

I'm not saying that these highly ranking universities are not prestigious, they are. But many times the rankings favour big, rich universities that sprawl in all areas of thought. Smaller specialized universities tend to not do so well.

amazing how that guy desperately tries to make this thread about who has the most elite universities when my original argument was "if you [...] factor in what life actually costs, including such things as having healthcare, sending your kids to college... i know where i would want to live.".
funny how he completely ignored the healthcare part and the part about affordability of a high quality education. i bet if i stated that america has a huge problem with obesity, he'd try to make this thread about which country has the best fast food...

My family has pretty good healthcare.

Europe is so equal that you can have something like a standard of living measurement.

You can't in the US. There is no comparing when I equality is this bad. You guys don't have ghettos like we do.

This thread is about many things, actually.

I don't know about you, but I can afford a lot of healthcare and college with the extra 43% PPP. Me personally, I spend about $300 per month providing excellent insurance for my family. My employer covers the rest (about $1100/mo), as per our employment agreement. Healthcare benefits are common remuneration in the US. And about that education... more Americans attain tertiary education than any country in Europe except Russia.
