bullshit. the term "mean" is an umbrella term for all kinds of measures of central position/tendency in a sample, random variable distribution or a numerical series. if someone is talking about the median, it's common practice to actually call it "median". when a source is refering to the "mean" of something without further specification, it's safe to assume they are talking about the arithmetic mean.
Well then it's super good for me that when I used the term mean, I pulled the numbers straight from the wikipedia entry on median incomes by country, meaning your statement that it's "safe to assume" isn't safe at all.

Is it true that the best universities in the world are in the US? Yes.
Is it true that education inflation is outstripping the full measure of inflation by a factor of 4? Also yes.

take away the elite colleges and universities and after that you will find a huge void where decent, middle class facilities should be
thank god we have those in europe and they are affordable
What void would that be? My brother holds a degree from the Carlson School of Management (no slouch there), found at plain old University of Minnesota. He paid for the classes himself, with money he earned from the US Navy via the GI Bill. Awfully middle class if you ask me.
/e though I do find it funny that you want to "take away" that which I was talking about, which you don't get to do. Now repeat after me: "The US has the best colleges in the world."
