the rumor is that a shell struck a radioactive waste repository, releasing some of the radioactive material. Its not another criticality incident or major release from chernoybl, but detected levels of radioactivity are now 65,500 nSv/hr, the highest reading possible on those instruments, so its off the charts. It was ~3000 before this incident. The background radiation is about 50-1000 nSv/h depending on location and altitude, around 900 in an airplane, around 270 average global human exposure. Chernoybl has been only slightly elevated above background radiation in the immediate complex of the nuclear site and at or below earth average in the forest and abandoned city. But this radiation level just spiked from 3000 to 65500+ and is some unknowable level above that, the first reading was maxed out.


The other possibility to debunk this is that its just latent radioactive dust that was settled on the ground and the troop movements through this area have sent dust airborne enough to trigger the radiation sensors. Which actually has a pretty similar effect in theory to a shell hitting a radioactive container I guess. Its possible all we're seeing is layers of dirt and dust that settled for decades and suddenly a bunch of troop carriers move in from Belarus and make a beeline towards Kiev, stirring up enough dust to skyrocket the readings
