Right. That first debate is going to be atrocious for Trump. Challengers typically do better anyway (remember when Romney obliterated Obama in the first debate?) so you probably want to temper expectations as opposed to setting the bar extremely low for Biden.

Biden's strengths are in 1v1 debates and town hall settings. He's pretty bad in large debates but that's not the format of the Presidential debates.

Yeah, Biden will do fine in the debates. He's only pretending to be senile. :/

It will be weird seeing a candidate OD on ritalin during a live debate.

Didn't you see that tweet? His fake dementia is an elaborate scheme to allow him to exceed the expectation of him being old and senile.

I don't remember Romney obliterating Obama. Like, I remember his whole "don't look at him" strategy that was weird, but I mostly remember it being pretty typical without strong feelings either way.

I'm probably biased haha. Here is some data on the first debate: Gallup - 72% say Romney won, 20% Obama, 9% no opinion. CNN - 67% Romney, 25% Obama, 8% tie. CBS among undecideds - 46% Romney, 22% Obama, 32% tie. To me, that's a pretty clear win for Romney.

Now, the 2nd debate was a doozy for Romney for a couple reasons. 1) "Proceed governor" and 2) The moderator specifically called Romney out regarding Benghazi which really pissed off conservatives.

Edit: oh duh, how could I forget "binders full of women."

Wasnt it the 2nd when Romney decided the best strategy was to debate the moderator instead of Obama? Man Obama must have been cracking up inside watching that unfold

Don't mistake being poor at public speaking with senility. Do you think George W Bush was legitimately dumb because he wasn't a great public speaker? Bush was no dummy!

Having seen Alzheimers and dementia first hand in my family and in others, I'm not convinced that Biden being a bad public speaker means he has dementia. I do think he gets distracted easily and goes off on tangents, but he's done that his whole career. But I suppose it doesn't matter at the end of the day. People will believe what they want to believe and that will translate into votes!

Back during his VP debates he seemed a lot sharper than he does today. Having jumbled speech is a symptom of dementia....so is irritability and memory loss.

Does he have it? Maybe not. But it even being a possibility should be a huge red flag for everyone.

It absolutely should be a red flag for BOTH candidates. Trump has been slurring words lately and misspeaks all the time. I don't think that means he has cognitive decline though. Personally, any candidate over 70 should release their latest physical.

Regarding that first Romney/Obama debate: iirc, Obama admitted a couple of years later that he was very busy at the time, didnt take the debate serious enough and came in underprepared.

Regarding Biden: it doesnt matter if he's a vegetable as long as he remains inoffensive and does not give voters in the middle the impression that he would enable loony far-left policy as president. The more he stays in the background, the more he can make this election a pure referendum on Trump, the better for him.

Barring a miracle economic resurrection, the only thing that can safe Trump is if he can find a way to polarize voters' views of Biden. He will definitely not be able to get his approval ratings above 50%, so he will need to rely on voters who disapprove of the job he's doing, but nonetheless hold their nose and vote for him because they consider him the lesser of two evils. As long as there's no reason for swing voters, centrists and anti-trump on-the-fence Republicans to hate or fear Biden, this won't happen. In a strange way, the fact that Biden is nearing vegetable status is to his advantage because it makes it harder for the Trump campaign to stoke fear of him among the Republican coalition.

In retrospect, I have to say Trump's saving grace in 2016 was that half the country already hated Hillary with a passion. So far, his attempts to create an equally polarized opinion Biden have all failed miserably.

The Biden of today is not the Biden of 4 years ago let alone 10-15 years ago when one might say he was in peak form.

I think he struggles with being coherent during the debates. I personally would find it incredible if he goes for more than 30 minutes without some gaffe.
