It's yet another choice of gonorrhea or chlamydia... wish the Dems would put up a real candidate or the country would realize just how bad this two party-two choice system is. Think I'm voting for whichever independent seems the most sane.

These debate polls are not very meaningful. They measure not only the actual debate performance, but also which candidate's arguments and positions the polled people liked better. This always gives an advantage to the candidate with the more radical, fresh policies over the more boring establishment candidate. Also, Hillary is not a good debater either. She got smoked by Obama in 2008 and only debated Trump to a draw in 2016 (wrongly assuming that this was all she needed to achieve).

Right. That first debate is going to be atrocious for Trump. Challengers typically do better anyway (remember when Romney obliterated Obama in the first debate?) so you probably want to temper expectations as opposed to setting the bar extremely low for Biden.

Biden's strengths are in 1v1 debates and town hall settings. He's pretty bad in large debates but that's not the format of the Presidential debates.

I don't remember Romney obliterating Obama. Like, I remember his whole "don't look at him" strategy that was weird, but I mostly remember it being pretty typical without strong feelings either way.
