Well, presidents like John Quincy Adams had little regard for actual democracy. Presidents like Andrew Jackson or James K. FDR interned an entire group of Americans based on kin liability and laid the axe on the separation of powers when he strongarmed the Supreme Court into giving up its resistance to his New Deal policies by threatening to pack the court.

Trump was neither the most murderous nor authoritarian nor corrupt nor racist president, nor has he been the most corrosive to American institutions. The only category in which Trump takes the cake is "lack of decorum and deference".

In the context of American politics I don't think it's hyperbolic to call Trump a tyrant. At the very least he's a wannabe tyrant. He's only constrained because of the law and people around him, not his own will.

Trump is the worst president in modern history, but beyond that I don't know. And yes, I'd stand by that without even considering January 6th. But breaking the tradition of a peaceful transfer of power is the worst thing(by far) he did as president, and the fact that he could be re-elected shows how insane the American people are.
