Yes, that's what the capitol police were supposed to do. In that case in particular, and this seems to get completely drowned out by the politicized narrative, the real failure was in crowd control that resulted in deaths by trampling / overexertion. Police have a responsibility to suppress mob action not just to protect the rest of the public and institutions, but to protect the mob from itself. There have been far worse incidents of mob crushes before, and there's been some notable ones since like the astroworld concert.
Its really not complicated. If a mob is being violent and rioting, the authorities have a duty to disperse them by force. If a mob is protesting peacefully, the authorities have a duty to respect their constitutional right to assemble and petition their government for redress. Sometimes its not obvious where that line is drawn and we have to hash out the blurry picture (charlottesville rally, for example), but in other cases it becomes extremely obvious (pretty much every BLM event, and Jan 6th)
