It just reminds me of all the people upset with undocumented immigrants "taking their jobs". Why not instead be angry at the companies hiring them if indeed such an "issue" actually exists.

You can be mad at both. Businesses are worried about their bottom line. They need to grow a pair and stand up for their employees and American values. People, on the other hand, need to stop being dicks. Even IF people were guaranteed to not be fired, they could be harassed instead. Look at what happened to August Ames.

The real issue that people don't want to talk about is mostly that people are using these social media platforms which are essentially giving companies complete and utter ability to control and manipulate social/cultural parts of society for their goals or financial benefit and then extends entirely to co opting entire movements to cash in and then this can even be merged into untold political power.

I don't understand how some people who mostly align with me even politically are okay with this power be given to corporations. Feel like since the mainstream tech giants lean socially left themselves people who are progressive or lean left are fine with it cause they aren't being negatively affected by it yet but that can't always be the case.

These companies are so quick to co opt BLM movements/anti police brutality and all the like but go completely silent on treatment of uyghurs in china and all the anti-democratic and human rights violations of China and other companies because in the end all they truly care about is $.

Cancel culture in a way just reveals how dangerous social media has become and I"m not really sure how we come out of this.

The difference is that traditional boycotting is merely an individual decision to discontinue support going forward, and encouraging others to do the same. It kind of starts and ends there.

So called "Cancel Culture" often involves going beyond this. They want people to be fired from their jobs/roles, disavowed by groups/companies that formerly worked with them, and for instance in JK Rowling's instance there are some (very small in number) people who believe that her intellectual property rights for Harry Potter should be revoked.

jk rowlings business is her public image, you cant disassociate the two when she makes money on books, movies, merch, websites, games, etc. We can argue whether or not the massively rich woman needs more cash, she doesnt, but its her "job". shes like a part time play writer and a hobby author. plus consultation on the current movies. she could in theory be asked to leave that project, her own universe lol.

It is a premise that is not remedied by debate though.

Why not? The only reason it isn't remedied by debate is because neither side comes to the discussion in good faith.

in order for this to work logically doesnt that imply the #metoo early adopters were saying "i dont want this guy prosecuted, or work taken from him in the future, but u should know he's a not cool guy"?

#metoo was a twitter hashtag for sure, but if that's the "origin" it was but a flash in the pan. it couldnt have been a week before "here's an anon story from my life to show women it happens to a lot of other women" became "this director did this thing on this date to me". stories women wanted to share were instantly drowned out by celeb accusations.

i just dont see how the two can be separated when the non-revenge phase was so short. i dont mind revenge on rapist, abusers, or any of their ilk of course.

I'll have to take your word for it. I'm not a Twitter historian; my sense of the movement was that it was a bunch of celebrities standing in solidarity with women to demonstrate that sexual violence isn't just something that happens to "regular" people, but that it happens to everyone--rich, powerful women included.

Now, maybe I am mistaken about the origin and intent of the movement. Or maybe that phase lasted such a short time, relative to the "history" of the movement, that it never really took on that shine to the majority of people who paid more attention to it than I did. But that is my understanding of the origin of #metoo; my understanding is that the outing of basically all of Hollywood was a byproduct of the #metoo movement, rather than its intent.

I don't disagree with that, but in addition there is something too ephemeral about the idea of "womanhood" that attempting to debate to a point of objectivity is an exercise in futility.

The same happens in abortion debates when people start 'debating' when life begins.

id say you're correct in your assessment of the origin, but would compare it to the Proud Boys. started as a male social drinking club, morphed into a group to escort conservative speakers to events, morphed into a counter protester group for those same speakers, and attracted unsavory types and finished by morphing into a more radical white supremacist anti-agitator agitator fighting group who just shows up to fight antifa. only with #metoo it was one quick morph, but in both cases their origin is disconnected and overshadowed from what it became. with #metoo it just was too juicy to read celebs stories and regular people's stories stopped getting press. if i had to guess i'd say it was about solidarity for a week, and its been about hollywood for years now.

Definitely a rollercoaster clown show.

The jews were their last economic scapegoat. They need one.

Social media has greatly reduced the quality of Americans. Their attention span sucks, they aren't driven, tiktok is truly making some really shitty music really popular. People stare at little screens for little dopamine hits and are boring AF.

Sec of State said Trump is thinking about trying to ban tiktok after it helped opposition organize at his rallys.

#metoo was a long-needed response to an abusive industry (hollywood) where two notable individuals (weinstein and polanksi) wrecked wanton*** havoc on women and young women for decades with no one doing anything about it. then came along a few brave millennial women who said “hell no creep” to weinstein and thus, #metoo justly started.
unfortunately a lot of the hollywood types that bandwagoned this were the worshippers of weinstein and protectors of polanski. and then it snowballed to the point that nice guy aziz ansari was accused of sexual misconduct because some floozy that pursued him didnt like how a date went!

a lot of these necessary movements start with a great cause targeting bad people but it all-too quickly morphs into inquisitions where anyone offended by anything is a victim. it’s how we got the playwright of Hamilton (a minority) going from enlightened toast of theatre to a “racist” for making a play about a historical character
