jesus man you can't start off with historic revisionism then expound on it.....

past presidents didn't want meetings, knowing the Kim's would just use them to propagandize their people. because they used all the meetings to do that even when it was with lowly members of the state dept, they are just photo ops for the Kims.

And where has this gotten them? Did past presidents' refusal to meet with NK, coupled with chickening out of military interventions, ever lead to anything? Oh, yeah, right, it led to NK becoming a nuclear power.

In all seriousness: why should we even care about what the North Korean propaganda will make out of those photos? Change on the whole NK issue can only come from tangible military or economic pressure, not from "counterpropaganda that convinces the North Korean people that their leadership is bad". The latter is not gonna happen anyway, the North Korean people is hopelessly indoctrinated anyway.

Now we all know you're a liberal hack disguised as a Trump supporter.

I'm not a die-hard conservative, never have been. I'm socially liberal, culturally conservative and a moderate on most economic issues. Perhaps an unusual mix in today's age of hyperpartisanship. ;)

Ok, seriously, lets all stop the partisan shilling for a moment:

  • First, that this meeting was even happening IS a success for trump. Whether it was due to his brilliant strategy or due to lucky timing on his part, he achieved a historic meeting that no president before him got to happen.
  • Second, we dont really know how much influence trump's fire and fury rhetoric really had. NK has been pursuing a stringent strategy for decades: "Get nukes at any cost, because nukes are a brutal equalizer. And they ensure that no attempts of regime change from either the American or the Chinese side is realistic anymore. Once we have nukes, we can start playing it nice and enter negotiations from a position of power." Maybe Trump was just lucky that this point in the long-term North Korean plan coincided with his presidency. Or maybe his tough talk about bloody nose strike and such has really gotten Kim and his generals scared and prompted them to stop their nuclearization early.
  • Third, the expectations for todays summit were completely exaggerated. There is a myriad of issues to be discussed, that Trump/Kim wouldnt solve or even discuss all of them on day one had to be expected. In this sense, the fact that today's meeting didnt blow up and instead yielded an agreement to future, more concerted talks, is a success in its own right.
  • Fourth, Trump actually did the right thing by being nice and assuring towards Kim today. The stage of the negotiations we're in now is all about building up trust, since both sides want huge concessions out of each other. With his fiery rhetoric and his whimsical withdrawal from the Iran deal and the G7 summit declaration, the North Koreans have every reason to distrust Trump's promises during the negotiations to come. He has a lot of work to do to convince them to trust him.
  • Fifth, the North Koreans did indeed "win" today's first round. The commitment from Trump to end joint military maneuvers with the South Koreans is a clear win for NK. Him not mentioning human rights, or insisting on the words "irreversible" or "verifiable" before "denuclearization" is also a win for NK. And note how "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" includes the american nukes in South Korea. The North Koreans agreeing to a denuclearization at all, on the other hand, is a win for Trump/America. As is NK's commitment to further negotiations.

Overall, today's summit has been a small net victory for NK, but as I explained above, this is ok - for the time being. Yes, I am still concerned that Trump might be signing onto a bad deal in the end because he wants a huge and symbolic foreign policy victory. On the other hand, the fact that the agreement calls for SoS Mike Pompeo to lead the next rounds of negotiations is reassuring.

Pretty solid assessment.

We'll see how it pans out. They promised similar things to Obama without Obama giving up any military presence.

you're making a few assumptions that are just plainly out of place.

The North Korean's have, since the creation of the DMZ, been un-invade-able. At least since Seoul has been established.

People seem to think that that date in reality is when they got credible nuclear power, WRONG! The have had enough conventional weapons to level Seoul for decades.

North Korea is a hedgehog. harmless to others but cannot be attacked.

North Korea has sought since the creation of Juche to isolate itself. So the "what has it gotten them" question with regards to past POTUS is "nothing ventured, nothing gained, nothing lost." No potus has been stupid enough to approach the hedgehog, as the hedgehog wants. Animals in the wild avoid the hedgehog, and it lives a peaceful life.

This approach has been at the cost of the North Korean people, and at the benifit of the US and South Korean people. If you feel that since the end of the Korean war there was a time and place for the US to move in and do a military intervention it's either because you're ignorant of the reality of NK or you're an evil motherfucker who wants millions to die and an entire region to be leveled by retaliatory bombs. I don't think you're evil.

Listen to this simple fact and base EVERYTHING off of it. Since Juche was created by the current Kim's grandfather, every single policy decision by the regime has been to hold power and prevent intervention. After the war they chose communism(to hold control with Russian backing), then they ditched communism for dictatorship (to hold control because they feared an uprising of the people), this started them playing the Chinese, Japanese, and Russians off each other (to hold control), they wen't Orwellian to hold control, etc. It's all about holding control.

The only real tangible motivation they have that isn't purely for power is hate for the Japanese people. that goes back centuries.

Oh, I am well aware that the true strategic crux of an invasion of North Korea would be defending Seoul from the NK artillery. But this doesnt mean that it cant be done at all. You would just need a strong-enough first strike from the air onto the DMZ and the North Korean territory behind it. It would be very risky and precarious to conduct a military operation of this magnitude in close proximity to the Chinese and Russian territory, but not fundamentally impossible.

so harmless that it can hit SK, Japan, Beijing and perhaps even the mainland United States with nuclear strikes? so harmless that they have already threatened such nuclear attacks?

nothing lost he says after one of the most brutal dictatorships on the planet who has been openly hostile towards the United States for over half a century has obtained nukes. nothing lost he says after it took the north koreans decades to obtain those nukes while we and the rest of the world watched.

ahhhh now i understand your issue. you see a big person walking down the street and assume they're inherently dangerous, without realizing they may be the guy from green mile that wouldn't harm a fly.

so basically North Korea's attempt to keep the world at bay by acting erratic and defensively creating a nuke (copying Israel btw who has never used any of it's nukes) has worked on you.

you have a lot of reading to do. what books or literature have you read on the subject outside of MSM? any?

first off how dare you, Malice's book is a great read and incredible intro to the subject historically and culturally. maybe you're not a fan because he's so condescending, or because he contributes to Fox News, where he's generally condescending.

Off the top of my head I also read Escape from Camp 14, The Impossible State, Great leader and the fighter pilot (led to it by camp14, same author), The Two Koreas, and a handful of shorter books all with titles i cant mentally keep straight because they're just stuff like "North Korea" or "The true North Korea" etc and closer to novellas. I had a massive boner for anything and everything North Korea in 2016, and i believe read about 10 book on the subject in a few month period. I read Malice's book first, then last, because it covers information other authors got incorrectly.

according to my excel sheet i'm currently at 78 books for 2018, but i did get pretty into podcasts so don't judge me.

I haven't read his book, just trying to trigger you.

I've read Meltdown by Mike Chinoy, I bought The Cleanest Race but haven't read it yet. I listen to podcasts/talks way more than I read.

cleanest race was on my list i may have to give it a spin. Korean perceived racial superiority is really a wonder to behold.

should read Malice's book, he's less condescending as an author but a prick as a person lol. he's got a podcast but it's dogshit tbh, spends too much time lamenting how modern Liberal Ayn Rand fans are schmucks and not enough time on NK.

ps successfully trigger sir.
