as an outsider looking in much of these numbers, claims don't make sense

can someone give me a very quick run down of the political system there and what these elections are about? i only remember the stuff about presidential elections and electoral colleges

ok so allegedly our legislative branch is supposed to write the laws and vote on them etc. (when Obama doesn't feel like doing it himself B) )
Its split up into two parts, the House and the Senate.

(Rudimentary Example progression of how things go typically: House writes a bill and votes. If the Senate majority leader is in a good mood he might put one of their bills up for a vote in the Senate and if it has enough votes it'll become law.)

So whats been happening is the house passes a bunch of stuff and Harry Reid (Senate majority leader) sits on his hands if he doesn't like a bill or if he thinks it would be politically disadvantageous to have a vote on it before the elections.

The Senate majority is whats in play here.
There are 100 Senators in total. Not all of them are up for election this year.
Whoever wins the majority gets to decide what is put up for a vote in the senate and they can pass some stuff with their 51+ votes. (some things require 60)
So its fairly important.

Right now we've got:
53 Democratic
45 Republican
and 2 Independents who lump themselves in with the democrats

Several of the Democrat seats are in real danger this winter and we're squabbling over who is more likely to win in each race and overall.
He laughably thinks the Republican hopes of a majority are gone completely if one state goes to an independent and he routinely maintains a house and senate range significantly skewed towards the democrats.

For comparison, here is Sabato's Crystall Ball outlook which has been one of the very most accurate predictors over the years:

compared to

Senate: R+0 - R+7
House: D+4 - R+7 - [Shift: <-]
Governors: D+6 - R+1

The Republicans picking up 0 seats in the Senate is beyond a joke at this point.

He's maintaining a wide range because he is much less certain than those other guys. He's essentially covering his ass at the moment but I'd like to see him converge in the next couple weeks.

CA-52 (where I'm registered to vote) is the most interesting House race: A gay republican vs. a moderate democrat.

Still don't understand how you can be red and gay... It makes no sense.

Hes covering his ass one way only, while squeezing the republicans on the other and saying their chances are gone completely if they don't win 1 state.

Its just another aspect of his posting that entrenches his forum reputation as a paid democrat shill.

That's because you're a single-issue voter and are obsessed with LGBT things. People like DeMaio are fiscally conservative, pro-gun, etc. and they happen to be gay. Supporting gay rights is a small part of his belief system.

Yes, that statement is a bit silly.
