Most people think of mental illnesses / disorders in a pretty straightforward way. Does it significantly impair your ability to live a functional life? Is it causing significant damage to your physical and mental health?

Moving the goal posts, which is inherently driven by political activism. To Gooms point, that’s why there’s growing push back to what ‘experts’ have to say about things.
I mean this is a repeated theme in sociology tainted by activism. Redefining terms to push goalposts and change interpretations without the underlying dynamics changing. A person who is so mentally addled they cannot function rationally and are exhibiting erratic and violent behaviors like unprovoked threats and delusional identity and unable to speak or reason coherently- is clearly mentally ill. And anyone can recognize it without consulting the DSM 5. It doesnt matter if its acute or chronic, drug induced or due to being abused as a child. We all have a basic survival instinct to recognize when a crazy person on a subway is a threat to our safety. And when the sociologist in the car speaks up and insists the guy with the knife saying he's jesus is actually just a PIC who needs our understanding, support and tax money, well doctor I dont need to outrun the hobo, just outrun you.
