How do you know this again? I feel like a lot of people just assume this. Where did you learn this?
The biggest reason for homelessness is lack of affordable housing according to the vast majority of studies I've been exposed to. The number one reason families lose their home is medical bankruptcy, usually for a physical injury and not mental health reasons.
A lot of homeless people aren't addicts or crazy. It is easy to write them off as such because it is easier to believe that people end up that way due to a moral failing or poor decision making, but sometimes they just got hurt at work or their wife got sick and they couldn't afford their mortgage.
I'm not saying there aren't people out there without issues that end up homeless but the majority of them are. In my experience the ones that don't have mental health or substance abuse issues tend to bounce back while the ones that do tend to remain homeless.
You are correct about affordable housing though. What I'm paying for in a mortgage for a 1500 square foot house with a full basement and fireplace is equal in what lower to mid range rent is in my area and anywhere from 200 to 400 dollars cheaper for mid to upper range rent. Home ownership is at an all time low and thats inflating the rental market and like other things when prices go up the poor are the ones that suffer the worst.
On that note those figures also include what I pay monthly in escrow for property taxes, insurance, and PMI as well. If it was just the mortgage payment it would be cheaper than low end rent.
