Its a product of his style. Normal people speaking as much as a politician and not mincing their words would say boneheaded or factually wrong things all the time and offend tons of people. Thats why career politicians long since learned to script themselves and give non-answers and misdirection like a magician. And Trump campaigned on being a populist outsider who speaks his mind freely, so that boorishness was an appeal. If he had somehow miraculously pulled it off without scandal or gaffe, I'd say he sold his soul to mephistopheles. But he didn't, and the media has been nothing but crucifying him for loose speaking all year long. Sadly for them, it usually ended up with narratives that average americans could identify with, like being caught saying that gold digger groupies with fake boobs want to be grabbed by the pussy by rich and powerful men. It simply doesn't have the negative smear power of something like pedophilia or cheating on your wife as she dies of cancer or having a 'wide stance'.
I've never cared about the gaffes and poor optics from either side, not when it was a goofy idiot in a tank, not when W. was spouting malapropisms. But I do distinguish the actual lies by politicians, those made from animus and with the intention of deceit. When Hillary Clinton said she was dodging bosnian sniper fire, she wasn't misspeaking or misremembering, it was a transparent conscious attempt to play up the trip and got caught out.
so
Trump lying about murder rates to make people afraid and accept more stringent policing policies that he has been pushing since campaign start = he's an idiot
Hillary lying about sniper fire to talk herself up = free space in bingo achieved
both are agenda pushing liars. ones a polished turd the other is a turd. now we could debate the merits of putting the fear in folks over non-existent nationwide rises in crime or awareness of terrorist attacks timed with a controversial EO but they are still agenda pushed lies.
