If you want to actually change things with your journalism, you catch people doing things their base will actually care about. Right wingers won't care, left wingers are inconsequential, and neutrals who even notice will see he made a clarification and dismiss his poor response as a confused reaction to a question he wasn't prepared for. Nothing changes. It isn't something to get excited over.

My experience is that the average person over 50 is not necessarily aware of what a white nationalist is, and the chances they do know drop significantly with every decade of age added. Contrary to popular belief on the internet, most people aren't spending all their time getting involved with current events. I don't know how old the politician is but he's clearly on the older side so it fits completely with a mistake, however unbelievable you may find it to be. The very fact he put out a statement to the contrary of his flub is extraordinary evidence supporting that likelihood. If he was actually racist and intended to say so he'd have doubled down. Instead he did what every politician does when they say something they recognize was stupid.
