This is about people joining the military. The man said in relation to “white nationalists” (which you know for a fact is a euphemism) joining the military, “they are Americans”. Meaning why would you not allow Americans who love America to join the military.

He explicitly said if racism is involved, that’s not cool and he disagrees with that. But Americans should be able to be a part of the American military.

His point is that you cannot thought police people wanting to join the military and protect the nation. If that is the intent, and you love America, you should be a part of the military.

As an outside observer, it strikes me that the interview was designed specifically for a 'gotcha' moment and the politician was woefully unprepared and made a meme worthy response. One the interviewer probably knew they were going to get. The journalism standard today is so terrible. This isn't some damning moment where they caught the guy in a kkk hood. The only people who will give any shits about the gotcha moment are people who already wouldn't vote for him. If you want to actually change things with your journalism, you catch people doing things their base will actually care about. Not something where a term that can be taken in multiple ways was taken the wrong way, even when that term is almost exclusively used in general discourse as the other way.

Right wingers won't care, left wingers are inconsequential, and neutrals who even notice will see he made a clarification and dismiss his poor response as a confused reaction to a question he wasn't prepared for. Nothing changes. It isn't something to get excited over.
