Yeah... it seems vaguely ludicrous. You're probably right that the government will have to accept many more deaths in order to keep the economy stable.

Well, the big hope atm is that we can get the same development as China, South Korea or Taiwan, with the spread being reduced to a manageable level after 4-6 weeks of shutdown.

From what I've read, China took extreme measures to limit the spread. Isolating those who tested positive from other family members, sometimes locking people into apartment complexes. South Korea successfully contained the virus through successful testing and isolating.

We're facing a different situation in America. I suppose that's why those people at Imperial College think the virus is going to continue to spread wide until a vaccine is produced.

Of course it will continue to spread. The big question is if it can be slowed down to a pace where our healthcare system isnt overwhelmed like in Italy, and how big the economic price for achieving this will be.

Dude ^^

China took extreme measures as early as January 23. The writing was on the wall.

Besides the inevitable embarrassing political talk near the end, Trump handled this conference pretty well. He's taking the threat seriously, no longer bullshitting to prop up the market.

Also, Pence is vastly superior in his information and tone. He'd be a real president.

honestly if Pence didnt have that whole gay conversion therapy past in his record he could be a popular guy. he's not oppressively christian and has the look required for a calm temperament GOP candidate.

You don't evaluate politicians based on objective factors like policy matchup or executive skills. You grade on a subjective scale that includes a huge curve for Trump.

^^

They make excuses like battered housewives for this dude lol.

The conversion therapy narrative was a conspiracy theory.

If anything Pence is proof of just how much hatred the left has for the right in this day and age. Pence is basically Trump but less rude - and the left still hates him.

Working from home is already making me go slightly mad.

My job was an on-campus job that is now effectively canceled. Sucks to suck.

Rest of our semester is online-only now too. Definitely going to go slightly mad.

Truth be told, all Western governments struggled to grasp the force of this pandemic and come to terms with the economically crippling measures necessary to slow it down. Trump's handling of the crisis was extra bad, and as usual, he made a complete and total fool of himself. But aside from a particularly inconsistent messaging, the level of failure by the Trump administration isnt really much different from that of other Western governments.

I don't know, man, New Zealand took it pretty seriously from the jump. We need more women world leaders.
