In the event the capitol hill is blown to smithereens, the designated survivor is entirely powerless, only there to serve as a link of legitimacy until he cedes control to some republican to replace trump. The report implies that the prior administration could retain control if wink wink nudge nudge the capitol went explodey, but anyone with a lick of sense can see in such a national tragedy, partisan gaming would be hurled out a window. But its not the ones with a lick of sense you need to worry about

It says that some non-political worker in the state department would be temporary president until someone else gets sworn in. I just watched it.

CNN didn't make that distinction in the report. The guy they interviewed at best hinted at it, but the reporter didn't bring up the ephemeral nature of the role, instead they said it would let obama's administration retain the white house without elaborating
