We don't have to form coalitions because we have primaries that sift all that out. If you include primaries, ours is way more diverse.

I'm a utilitarian so those points are not relevant to my perspective. Government cuts to e.g. science funding will directly result in less total science funding and is the same thing to me as wanting less science funding.

Thing is if you say "I want education, but I don't want the government to do it" is equivilant to saying "I'm okay screwing the poor out of education as long as we keep government from being involved". In practice it means you're too enveloped in disliking government to see that you'd be screwing over a huge segment of people for ideological reasons, and you like education less than ideology.
