Yep. Dems have a checkered history.

I think democrats were under more pressure to prove they were tough on crime and take radical stances in the 90s to defuse republican attacks on them
Whereas republicans today can capitalize on shifting social attitudes to undercut minority support for democrats by championing uncontroversial criminal justice reform

President Trump is doing more for criminal justice reform than the last several presidents combined, with his efforts helping so many minorities who where overtargeted and afflicted by polices such as the “black superpredators crime bill” and “three strikes rule” which was wielded with reckless abandon by (D) candidates such as Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris

Trump deserves credit, but more Republicans opposed the bill than Democrats. If Republicans were willing to work with Obama or Hillary on criminal justice reform, it would've happened under them as well. And without Kushner and Ivanka whispering in his ear, I'm not even sure why Trump would've done it. It's not like his base was itching for it.... his messaging during the campaign was the exact opposite.

Very true. We should still remember how bad the crime situation was in the 80s and early 90s. Those were different times which did indeed call for a tougher stance on crime.
Going for mass incarceration of non-violent offenders was obviously the wrong way, but we should not forget that there was broad public support for these "tough on crime" bills from the 90s. Even in black communities, there was very sizable support for them.

I dont think that "punish the shit out of the really bad guys, but give non-violent offenders a second chance" is off-brand for Trump.

“I said, whatever you do — and we were still in the process of trying to find someone to take my place — I said whatever you do, don’t hire a ‘yes man,’ someone who won’t tell you the truth — don’t do that. Because if you do, I believe you will be impeached,” Kelly recalled, in an interview at the Sea Island Summit, a political conference hosted by the Washington Examiner.

“That was almost 11 months ago, and I have an awful lot of, to say the least, second thoughts about leaving,” Kelly said. “It pains me to see what’s going on because I believe if I was still there or someone like me was there, he would not be kind of, all over the place.”

Maybe I'm just old fashioned... but has anyone considered electing a president who doesn't need to be advised not to commit impeachable offenses? I love how White House staff and Trump pundits treat him like a toddler who can't be expected to know right from wrong.

you weren't listening.

even if we ignore the advocating for holding the IC accountable... it was one of his pitches from the beginning.

he's released quite a few people from prison early off in his term, before "anything" else was really accomplished.
he's appointed numerous judges. (mostly needed for processing from an extreme back-log of illegal immigration cases)
agree with this next one or not... he has fully advocated for the reform of laws on illegal immigration.

he signed the first-step act last year

i could bring forward a lot more as the guy signs executive orders every week now. this was just off the top of my head though.

When did Trump ever advocate a less punitive criminal justice system during the campaign? Post some links.

i quoted "criminal justice reform". not "less punitive".

however, it was one of his major pitches to the black community.
too many people are being unjustly locked away for life because of drugs.

it's not super easy to track video's back to 2016 pointing out one specific thing.

i'll try to continue my search tomorrow and give better examples where he wasn't asked specifically about it.
i'm gone for today
