Players debating NFL's proposed donation to social justice organizations

Quote
In an unprecedented move for a major professional sports league, the NFL has proposed partnering with its players to effect social justice change, though not all players are in agreement on the proposal.

The league on Monday submitted to players the final draft of a proposal that would contribute nearly $100 million to fund causes considered critically important to African-American communities. The NFL hopes this effort will effectively end the peaceful-yet-controversial movement that former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick started when he refused to stand for the national anthem last season.

However, some players who have actively protested since 2016 are displeased with the NFL's approach and plan to break with the Players Coalition, a group of roughly 40 players that negotiated with the league office, over how its leaders have handled negotiations. Miami Dolphins safety Michael Thomas and 49ers safety Eric Reid tweeted Wednesday that they are withdrawing from the coalition.

"The Players Coalition was supposed to be formed as a group that represents NFL Athletes who have been silently protesting social injustices and racism," Thomas and Reid said via Twitter. "However, Malcolm [Jenkins] and Anquan [Boldin] can no longer speak on our behalf as we don't believe the coalition's beliefs are in our best interests as a whole."

so the NFL offers up $100MM to the social causes that have been at the core of the kneelers
shocker that this isn't good enough. maybe 1000 $100MM donations will work

e: the $100MM seems to be only for African-American communities. Nothing for downtrodden hispanic, middle-eastern, asian, native american, transgender, women's domestic abuse victims, CTE victims, or white trailer trash communities

The main thing that would drive positive change is criminal justice reform since that is the main issue in the first place. The drug war and misappropriation of the the courts power to hand down sentences is not fair with in regards to color of skin.

It wouldn't matter if it was 500 million. The plight of minorities and anyone from a poverty background or damaged family background isn't going to change until the courts stop locking up fathers in prison for drug abuse/non violent crimes.

The one single statistic you can use to predict a young male becoming a criminal , not graduating high school , having no post high school training/education , not having a job , and females repeating the cycle of being single mothers is if they grew up in a one parent household.

The drug war and the disgrace that is our criminal justice system has destroyed million of American families. And now pharmaceutical companies have destroyed families regardless of their income level since they willingly push opiates to a huge chunk of the population when the repercussions and risks of doing so created the environment for the opiate epidemic.

the NFL doesn't control cops or courts. they can provide a large sum of money to be used for lobbying for reform (which they have) and that has been met with displeasure by NFL players.

$100MM isn' t enough, $500MM isn't enough so what's the endgame? or even the next step beyond the kneeling and saying something has to change?

Or is it just players saying "hey NFL you need to do more for social causes. NO NOT LIKE THAT"

it's a semi legit gripe, the NFL isn't going to lobby successfully against the private prison industry or the prison guard's union. the money would have been better spent on community initiatives in my opinion.

Not that they shouldn't lobby at all, but putting all your eggs in that basket is like lighting money on fire.

Most of these protests are just people trying to continue the narrative and bring light to the issues they see. Since most of the protests have been brought to bigger stage or escalated from police brutality. They never cared about money.

But the issue itself I find more issue with the courts than the police. The police are just a byproduct of the environment they are put in. The courts have allowed this system to become more and more toxic and destroy solid parent/child structures to allow better child development and a healthier society.

lol, well my gif was entirely unironic. too many people ask "are cops good" or "are cops bad", not enough people ask "who's fault is it really that cops are what they are", and if they do it's usually answered with a racial slur by some idiot.
