I think the latter part you mentioned is what I'm really talking about.
It's easy to find out if some objective statement is true or not. There were either tanks in place X or there were not. But when the media injects opinions, tone, or a spin to try and make the reader feel one way or the other, it's a lot more subtle and nearly impossible to fact check because at this point its not really just reporting facts but providing 'analysis'.
I think there was this Russell Peters stand up that kind of say something similar it goes like this
They show a Indian minding his own business and suddenly bam they show a 7 - 11 Store in another picture
They show a Chinese lady doing grocery and bam ! they show a car accident.
