The problem with the argument that "no one will deal with him" is that it's just not true.

Aside from the Western democracies, there's very little desire to sanction Russia or otherwise cut off trade. China, obviously, but India, Vietnam, and Brazil as well. Collectively these countries represent roughly half the global population. Israel and the Middle East want to remain neutral. Africa doesn't have time to care.

Even if just North America and Europe don't deal with them that's already enough to be a ridiculously high cost. Half the world cutting you off from trade is a huge blow even if the other half will still trade with you.
