Yes, everyone knows what you're trying to say with this old cringey phrase, so please don't repeat it or explain it. No one expects to be immune from other peoples' reactions.
The idea of constitutional free speech is the protection of unpopular speech, because popular or accepted speech doesn't need protection. The problem with the absolutely stupid "not free from consequences" slogan is that it turns speech into a positive right. You're allowed to say certain things, so long as I approve of them. Constitutional free speech is written and intended as an inalienable right, that one need not filter through what is "allowed" to be said.
Here comes you explaining that it's not "free from consequences" agsin, right? Maybe not. Pleasantly surprise me.
